The night is clear, not a cloud in sight. The moon is already waning, but its light still fuels an emotion in the poet’s heart. And then, littered across the sky, is a multitude of glittering stars. These beautiful stars are so distant physically, yet you stretch out your hand as if to touch them. Ah yes, you heard the common saying “reach for the stars”. In truth, even though you know it is an impossible dream, within you, you long to be able to do it.
And now to the reality. Speakers stand on stage and exhort you to reach for the stars. You look at them and they look glamorous, they look spiffing, they look successful, they sound successful. Many a time, people equate that statement of “reaching for the stars” to the level of success they see on stage, on videos, what they imagine when reading these success stories. Sure, your potential is often greater than you can imagine. However, for the vast majority, to make the quantum leap is not reality. Your success cannot necessarily be judged by mere comparison with others. Rather, your success is judged in light of your own progress, in light of your own potential and, in light of the efforts you make, the attainable yet challenging goals you set. There are many factors, traits and qualities that will benefit you on your journey. Some are innate and others you can learn and make it part of who you are. The role of mentors must never be underestimated. That you are teachable, a good listener, one who learns to think and reason, are some of the important qualities that you will need.
Success can be in a specific area of your life. It is great if it cuts across all aspects of your life. Personal development, social adaptation, relationships (marriage, collegial, parenting), debt management and career are all aspects on your life of which some may need attention. Success is also beating traumas, grief, and setbacks.
