The word “redundant” is one word that will evoke volumes of words in response as if to dispel the meaning of the word “redundant”. Consider that you are a 30-year-old and told that you are redundant. This certainly will be rather painful. Being your self-respecting self, you will make a case for not being considered “redundant”, surplus to requirements, no longer useful. This list goes on, but you get the message. The truth is that being redundant is insulting, irrespective of age. The focus of this note is on being “redundant” and not necessarily as a result of downsizing of a business, etc.

You enter into the workforce with full knowledge that at a point in your life, because of age, you will be redundant. It is called retirement. Retirement is described as “the action to leave your job and ceasing to work”. The economic system through its regulation by government determines that, at a certain age, you are redundant, purely because of your age. This point as it relates to economics is somewhat beyond the scope of this note. The focus is on how the word relates to you. It is simply that you signed up for it and you look forward to implementing it, the “retirement plan”. You talk of vacationing and taking it slower in your old age. You talk of having more time when you retire. Time though is not yours in absolute terms. It may be that you consider the life expectancy of the people in your region and perhaps you look to your family history to give you comfort that you will be able to have a relaxing, enjoyable, stress-free retirement. What about ailments, etc that might set you back and not allowing you to enjoy your retirement. But don’t dwell too much on that. Consider, rather, your usefulness over the course of your life. Consider that at no point in your life should anyone consider you to be redundant and, most definitely, you yourself must never consider yourself redundant. You have the ability to grow mentally and spiritually until you leave this world. In you being ever teachable, you have to ability to impart skills, knowledge and experience to others. Redundancy has that element within it that says you are vegetable that will waste away and not even fertilise the soil around you. Consider ways to be a contributor such that you continue to add value to others. Society has bought into the economic system but life has its own meaning.

The purpose of life means more than just breathing in air and eating. Your life might feel like that now which means that you must have a plan in place other than just a financial retirement plan. Redundancy weighs you down even if you don’t think about it or consider it consciously. You are worth more. It not just money. It is all about you being a person of value. Make you and your life count.

Take time out to plan your life, to change your life where necessary and look to learn and grow always.
