You have gone through life, or at least part of your long life which is still ahead of you, writing examinations and tests. In your infancy and toddler days, you heard the word “no” so many times that your mind tells you “no” even before you hear it. These are examples, not only merely of right and wrong, but of choices.

Life is full of choices and ultimately you are judged by your choices. This is one reason why many people avoid making decisions. Of course, not making a decision is a decision itself. Nevertheless, you can never escape making decisions. You may decide matters only so far as it pertains to you privately while you abdicate that responsibility in a group or with your spouse for that matter. Focusing on one reason why people do not easily take the responsibility of decision-making is that it requires “research” or acting on the information required for a reasonable decision. The possible negative outcome is another reason why decision-making is avoided. Your personal development is dependent on the strength of your character. One of the traits of a strong character is one of conviction which goes hand-in-hand with confidence. An important development is to learn a level of conscientiousness which means that you will pay attention to detail in formulating your decision. The bigger the issue in question, the bigger the decision and the more circumspect with the information at hand. This simply means that you will need to look at the matter from all angles, or put another way, the pros and cons in the matter and decision at stake. There is no easy way out in making decisions. The best way in deciding on anything is to be informed. Of course, on some matters, it is your gut that tells you. Your health is one such part of your life that you will want the best decision and thus solid information. If your doctor tells you that he will remove your kidney, you will want all the information, including the consequences, on the matter. On such a big decision you may earnestly consider a second opinion. There is a line to be drawn for every mature adult beyond which no one decides for you. The bottom line is that only the mature can make decisions. You are mature and it is upon you to make decision relevant to you.

As I say this to you, I understand that you do not really understand how to make decisions or feel empowered enough to make decisions. You may need further assistance to overcome this problem. In the meantime, at least ensure that you become part of the decisions that are relevant to you. You are important.
