Success in this life is not permanent. It can take a mere split second to wipe it all away. Will you then say “he was successful” as if success has a past? Or is success based on the present and future. (of course, success in this context is on those still living).
Success depends on many things including decision-making. Decision making itself is a process. Then how do you judge success. Success can be little victories along the way, but the successful person is one who ends on a high. You have seen many people fall from grace, many people who accumulated wealth and then lost it, many broken marriages, and countless other examples. Success is relative and you can achieve it according to your ability. If we took charity as an example, then the poor man who gives ten rand from the one hundred rand he currently has, has given more from his wealth than the rich person who gives a thousand rand from the millions he owns. Likewise, abilities and circumstances differ from one person to the next. Importantly, priorities may vary too. Judging success from the outside is easy but leaves many unanswered questions. It is for this reason that many follow a successful person only in a certain aspect of his life, e.g. you learn from him because of his business skills, but you may be shocked when it comes to his private life. Suicide has become almost acceptable to the extent that people still celebrate someone as successful even while they committed suicide. This, therefore, indicates that ethics differ, and you may wish to include that in your requirements for judging success. At the same time, the person who brushes aside the suicide may consider you judgemental. By now, you will realise that you will need to understand how you assess success. The reality though is that success is really only judged when the job is done or, if it is the life of the person, when that life has ended.
Success is something that ought not to create a void but rather it must be fulfilment. Make success a lifelong journey and measure each step so that you strive to be on track. When you are aware, you can rectify shortcomings. Stay informed and keep focus.
