The tree sheds its leaves as it transforms itself from season to season. The leaves are blown away by a strong breeze and land in a faraway place. Some of the leaves are collected and turned into compost and remain useful for a while longer.

For many in the work environment, they fear being the leaves that are blown away and becoming redundant. It is in this group of people that you find a defeatist attitude and a sense of fear envelops them. One such example is that the experienced and senior person reluctantly shares his knowledge and experience with a younger inexperienced person. He holds back just enough to exercise a form of control over the junior because he fears being replaced. Downsizing and capsizing of businesses happen all the time and some people will lose their jobs. It is not something we wish to see much of or, more so, to experience. Your usefulness does not depend on someone else but on yourself. The leaf falling from the tree benefits the soil and vegetation by being turned into compost. It is not the direct correlation between you and the leaf except that you must continue to strive to improve and add value.

The leaf will eventually fall from the tree. The tree will live on and the leaf will enter into a different dimension. Life will go on but the your situation will enter into a different dimension. This dimension will entail your continued upskilling (formally or informally), your personal development and, of course, your health (mental and physical). Something that you must never let go of is quality of life. When this becomes a priority, you are likely to make better decisions.

A large percentage of people are absent from their work because of stress. Stress is multi-faceted but fearing the loss of your employment is an important factor that triggers stress. Prepare yourself well and minimise the impact of stress. Staying relevant is to prioritise personal development.
