There are two words, on opposite sides of the time frame, that everyone is drawn to, in some way or another. The idea of eternal life on earth is, at least subconsciously, evidenced that, except for the suicidal, that the subject and contemplation of dying are avoided. On the other side of the scale, you want everything in an instant.

Death is a natural consequence of life. Many religions believe in an afterlife of heaven and hell (and a discussion for another time). But the word that is most abused, in our actions and desires, is “instant” (in its various forms). When you are sick, you look for instant relief. When need help, you want it instantaneously. Instant gratification. Instant food. And the list goes on and on. Imagine a baby is born and, within minutes, ages sixty years. And suppose this baby, now sixty years old, lives for another thirty years. You may agree that it is hard for sixty-year-olds to cope, many-a-time, even after a lifetime of experience, for the remaining years of their lives. How then will an instant sixty-year-old cope, having no experience of life. The point, simply, is that life is a process and, in that life, other processes need to take place and not be rolled up into an instant “solution”. It is in your health, as an example, that the body learns to deal with challenges of ailments and disease through its immune response. It is a system, and it has a process. Instantaneous relief (in all circumstances) foregoes a process which requires a little bit of time. How many stories are there about “instant millionaires” who won big in a lottery only to lose it all, almost as quickly. The process, something that happens over time, of acquiring that wealth was absent and these people were ill-equipped to deal with their newfound riches. The endless need for instant “everything” has affected your nutrition and consequently your health. The endless need for instant “everything” has affected your financial stability as you incline to scams and/or debt. Your endless need for instant “everything” has affected your spirituality as you incline for heaven on earth, with a seemingly endless line of luxuries. Then there is the world of the virtual. This world is about to explode into another dimension. This is about you getting instant gratification. All the while death seems an eternity away.

Without being too deep on the consequences, I will highlight a point or two. This instant gratification makes you lose focus on your real future and that of the generations to come. One aspect of which to remind yourself is that humans are social beings. The world of instant “everything” involves machines and artificial intelligence. Already, you understand that artificial is the opposite of natural. You know that machines are not humans, yet, here you are interacting more with machines than humans while humans are supposed to be social beings. Thus, the “process” of instant everything has lost the dynamic of what it is to be human. And that simply means that you are being robbed of your humanity.

There is a need to look at things and back up the truck so that you can live and not that have your life lived for you. If ever there is a need to have that discussion, then it is now. This is the time to use the word “instant” in that the right decision made in an instant can have eternal benefits.
