The language of hope and despair hinges on two words which, in English, sound so similar. So similar are they that a slip of the tongue will change the meaning, but what was said may yet seem appropriate. “I achieved this because it was my fate” or “I achieved this because of my faith”. The subject is broad, and we are living in a time where the need for discussing this, understanding this, and be guided on this, is all the more necessary.

These words, faith and fate, can be use by two people while they have different meanings and intentions when using these words. It is impossible to deal with it appropriately in this short note. The discussion can be intense and confusing. The matter deals with cause and effect and spirituality. Many will claim spirituality and define it according to their understanding and beliefs. By the very nature of attaching faith in the outcome, you are hoping for an outcome which is beyond your control but under the control of someone or another being. Fate, similarly, is an outcome that you attach to a force beyond yourself. For the most part, believers attach both faith and fate to God, the Supreme being.

In times of difficulty especially, you will say that this is your fate and be on your way, in full acceptance of the situation as is. But both fate and faith are related to cause and effect. If everything is fate, then you will show no faith as you simply act merely as a pawn. If everything is faith, then you will not act and only pray. You know this is not how it really is. You have already done much in your life, some had good outcomes, and some seemed like failures or punishment. In short, fate is what has passed, much like all your actions have been recorded and the result displayed. As for the future, then it is to act, seeking the desired outcome and then have faith. Of course, carrying faith with you every step of the way, makes the road ahead a lot easier. One way of looking at contentment is to do your best while having faith in God and accepting His decree of the outcome. A part of doing your best is to ensure that good prevails because otherwise it will be like you are allowing everyone to litter and dump their garbage. If this was the case, then what will be the physical condition in which you live. Likewise, in promoting good and warding of crime and sin, you will create a spiritually and emotionally cleaner environment. So, turning a blind eye is compounding your problem as faith requires committed actions for the outcome, fate, to be good.

Fate and faith go hand in hand. In understanding this, you must play a meaningful role and not be passive (passive is a subject on its own). Indeed, your action in placing your faith in God, while you have attended to your responsibilities, is a matter of faith and fate.
