History is so interesting except that it sounds boring to learn about dead people. At least that is what many think. But let’s take some lessons from history which should make you delve a little more. So, does the earth revolve around the sun or the sun around the earth? Shall we ask Galileo Galilei? Do you know who he was? Was he right about his theory?
The schooling system is what it is, a conveyor belt to get you to the other side where you will hopefully find some employment. And that’s how you see life, isn’t it? For those up to debating this point, feel free to comment. For now, let’s address those (parents and learners) who need to find a way to get through school. Generally, the next step is tertiary education from where you get a qualification. A qualification for what? Some qualifications are more specialised than others and this should not be overlooked. However, before getting the qualification, you need to be accepted into a tertiary institution and successfully complete that course. But not so fast. Spaces at very limited at tertiary institutions and you are not guaranteed a place. Are you currently in a position to be among the top decile or two of students who will qualify. And if so, will it be in the stream that you want to be? There are many questions to answer. Choosing subjects to give you the best chance of tertiary institution entrance is important. Career guidance is important. And then the most neglected of the lot, is some life lessons.
Many parents have had some reasonable success and are able to guide their children. However, sometimes it may be that the process of guiding their children is not ideal, for a whole host of reasons. Others have been trapped in survival mode (not based on successful career, but perhaps many life challenges) and are not quite at the level to guide their children. Schools, for whatever reason, don’t do enough. Children talk to their friends who have as little experience about life as they have. The cry for help is there. Subject choice, career choice and further studies need attention.
