Contrasts! A storm inside the office while it is the most beautiful peaceful day outside. Elsewhere it may be a scary storm beyond the concrete walls, but the office or workplace is productive, yet tranquil, serene and peaceful. Circumstances might well dictate the happenings in the office, but it is the culture of the organisation and, on a micro level, the office or immediate workplace that determine the approach to work itself, to colleagues, to clients and to challenges that are bound to appear.

Culture is generally a top-down approach. The right culture must be able to address the different personalities with all their baggage, attitudes, fears and ambitions. Ideally, the leader is concerned about what really matters and parks his own idiosyncrasies far away. Leadership styles may differ, and different leadership styles may achieve similar “corporate” results, but the overall results might be more telling. Leadership influences culture and culture impacts the team and its members.  When a strong culture exists before a new leader arrives, then it is more difficult to bring about big changes to the culture. Unless it already is the ideal culture, the leader must exert enough energy to bring about the necessary immediate changes to enhance productivity, teamwork and instil the right winning mentality. Leaders, though, must be reasonably adaptable and that in itself is a titbit of the ideal culture.

Parents are, by default, leaders. The teacher in the classroom is a leader. And so many more examples. If the right culture can be adopted from the ideal leader and that baton is passed on, then communities with a great culture can grow and so on and so on. It starts with your mentality and attitude. The more emphasis will be on you if you are already in a leadership role. This does not mean the “I” mentality, but the focus remains on “we”.
