Struisbaai is a coastal town about 200km outside of Cape Town. That part of the world is quite nice and great for fishing. Ah yes, fishing does take some patience. I mention Struisbaai because, even as South Africans, the pronunciation will differ somewhat. One such pronunciation is “Stress-Baai”. Is that bye to stress?
After the holiday break and as people slowly get back to the grind and schools reopening in a few days, many will fall victim to renewed stress. It may well be that some have not even recovered from the stress they have been saddled with for so long. And how could they recover, when they have not learnt to deal with stress but merely went on holiday, much like painting over a cracked wall. Indeed, stress in a monster in terms of the number of victims it claims, sending medical bills soaring. You will rightly lament “why did you have to raise the topic now?” and “you are just causing me stress already”. I am indeed sorry to be the bearer of the ugly truth. More so, that for most there is no evidence that 2024 will be better than 2023. You can, for yourself, note a rather long list of things that may not be helpful. That wonderful raise you received for this year will be handy, for sure. The saying does go “don’t fix it if it ain’t broke” and that may well be how you see yourself, your family (life) and your job. That is good. You are of the lucky few; extremely few. As 2023 drew to a close, I dealt with kids whose parents are keen on getting their children to make the correct subject and career choices. A topic like this brought relief to those parents and a great awareness to the learners on setting their goals and getting ready for adulthood, meaning work and career. These are examples of people using the tools to tick a box and not land, unnecessarily, in Stress-Bay. There are numerous examples where few people act while the majority take things for granted without realising pitfalls that may lie ahead.
Struisbaai is a far cry from Stress-Bay but few people live in Struisbaai, both figurative and literally. I wonder how many people put it on their New Year’s resolutions to not go to the doctor that often and were brave enough to take out a “hospital plan” on medical aid. One reason, for sure, why people ignore the health resolution, is that people wait for something to happen before they act and, sadly, will allow stress to consume them and do nothing until they really can do nothing. This message is brought to you in the interest of your health and the need to reduce stress. It is merely to suggest that you should live like you are in Struisbaai and not Stress-Bay. But do take action.
