The idea of being busy is often an excuse not to do something else. You were too busy. Of course, men do have “doing nothing” as an important component of being busy – “I am busy doing nothing”. There is always a difference between productivity and being busy, #justsaying.
The standard answer is “I am busy” unless it is something that really interests you or you are totally overcome by boredom. Boredom is something that needs to be addressed. For now, let us continue to dissect “busy”. It will be ideal if we can equate or correlate busy with productivity and, thereafter, analyse productivity itself. Suffice for now to suggest that being busy is all good except that it may be that the other items on your list are not being prioritised, i.e. you may tend towards those items on your list that is within your comfort zone. The real needs in your life that will demand that you attend to the personal growth items on your list are deliberately avoided or relegated to “not so important now”. You have convinced yourself that you have reached your peak while you may not even be halfway through. You cannot always blame your “nearly moments” on your personality or your circumstances. While there might be some validity in them, you need to seriously assess whether you have indeed given your all and that you have exhausted, albeit in the short term, all avenues to overcome whatever obstacles with which you may be confronted. Busy therefore can be seen as a mindset for most people when, on the one hand, time management needs to be implemented and on the other, a focus to reach further than you are currently doing. Many excuses are used in order not to go that extra mile but being busy seems convenient since it does not put you in a bad light. Few will say “I am not able to do that extra mile thing because I am incompetent” while others may refrain from citing their fear. This translates to the easy escape “I am busy”. In reality, this busy-ness plays a role in the complacency in relationships, the comfort zone in the workplace and even when socialising, family visits, on the question of fitness and so many more aspects of life.
It is necessary now to be busy with moving forward and just pushing yourself a little more.
