The room is filled with many people. A hum, a buzz and a clatter of chatter is only interspersed by shrill laughter. An ideal social event of family and friends. There were no invitations but merely a spontaneous gathering. Among the buzz of excited voices, there is one who smiles wryly to seemingly fit in. Yet the heart is lonely .

Tears are but the blink of an eye away and she clenches her teeth not to expose her innermost feelings. After all, it is she who would be seen as odd and a party pooper. Yet, in all of this, no one has taken to understand her situation. She is expected to tag along. She has needs but no one can see it because their overbearing personalities only bring their lives to the fore. There are always incidents in their lives which can be discussion points or moments to bitch. She drowns in her loneliness even in a crowded room. Sometimes she feels better alone, being able to console herself in her solitude. Now, surrounded by people, she has to whip up the strength to smile and even try and contribute to a vain conversation. How painful is this not as if this gathering was a double punishment for her?

No doubt, someone did observe her during all of this.  When all has died down and she seeks her solitude only because in her thoughts she finds acceptance albeit by herself. This scenario, unfortunately, is also not deemed acceptable and she is maligned for being moody, broody and whatever else may rhyme. Her life is a misery, she has neither the strength not the ability to speak up. She soaks up more pressure and the loneliness only intensifies.

Some may relate to this, and some may not even give it a thought. The reality is that there is very likely a person like that in your immediate circle. Don’t dismiss the subject matter, nor dismiss the person. Be uplifting, not overbearing. Be caring, not dismissive.
