My life motto is ‘Do my best, so that I can’t blame myself for anything.’ – Magdalena Neuner
You must take personal responsibility. You cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but you can change yourself.” – Jim Rohn
The story of Jonah and the fish may not interest you because you are not religious, but pause for a moment and take a lesson from it, nevertheless.
Life has its moments and there are times when the sea becomes rough. Life’s difficulties hit us one after the other and we cannot understand it. This will get you down and no one can understand it or some will just blame it on bad luck. The beauty about life is that it actually is an obstacle course. While you may snigger at this thought, everyone likes a challenge, and many would go somewhere to do an obstacle course as entertainment. It is sad doing an obstacle course when you are not in an entertainment park or merely watching a movie, and this situation is real.
There are moments in life that we sometimes miss or overlook. These are the moments that prepare us for what we may be encountering down the line. Ideally, at each day end, one should look back and reflect on the day’s happenings, learning from some, building muscle, getting wiser and being grateful. Every obstacle course needs a combination of these lessons to understand it and overcome it. Gratitude is something that is always important, be it for a near miss and even smooth sailing.
At times it may appear that some people are cheating life, but that is a facade. You will not be able to cheat for you will be swallowed, no matter in which form the fish will be. Therein lies some hope still, that you may be given a chance to reassess and revisit the mistakes you may have made and turn back. The road (or decision) you initially took was not the correct one and that may have been why the little obstacles kept on popping up.
You may have been brushing those little obstacles aside, but they kept on and on and sapped your energy. It may be that you did not apply the wisdom and knowledge, it may be that you did not show gratitude. There is no harm in turning back and correcting matters. You may have learnt valuable lessons in meeting up with these little obstacles, but the most important lesson should be one of humility and not arrogance where you believe that you can defy the odds. Being arrogant will only bring harm to the self and it lacks responsibility. Taking responsibility means changing a course, a tool, a trait so that the desired outcome is achieved where you, and those dependent on you, benefit.
It will be a dark period when you have taken the wrong course of action. Your humility will bring much light. Your show of gratitude will make it much brighter, and your wisdom will shine through as you determine the corrective action. That light will surely shine on those who were meant to benefit from the responsibility that lies with you.
