The one time when the 80:20 principle favours the 80% of people being right, is that human beings are social creatures. The 20% (25%) who are introverts will not necessarily disagree even though they themselves feel inclined to be less social.

Life in a lockdown situation has shown that the spirit of people are negatively impacted. It is not that people don’t understand the situation but the strain of confinement is real. The changes in society are impacted by technological development and commerce has become e-commerce to an ever-increasing degree in that arena. There is some good in it. But we cannot live our lives “online” although we show tendencies to want to do so. Our over-reliance on social media, as a means of communication, has dulled the social side of our natural inclinations. We have been out and about, all the while being hooked on social media and not enjoying the company we are in to the full extent. We have neglected the finer and more beautiful things in life. We have let ourselves down and we have willingly become prisoners, even before lockdown. Unless we break the mould, we will enforce lockdowns on ourselves when we become “online” people, learning, trading, and socialising online to greater and greater extents. The human aspect is lost because we are now communicating with a machine, a phone. Indeed the word is “virtual” and virtual is not “real”.

We have a small window of opportunity to break this mould and mode into which we have stepped. Soon there will be a point of no return. Crime statistics may drop – or rather real crime statistics will drop but cybercrime will increase because our world will be a cyberworld. No handholding, no hugs and kisses but emojis and perhaps holograms. You will be a prisoner in your home and you will believe that this is life. After this lockdown, leave your home and enjoy what life outside your home has to offer of nature and other places of cultural interest. You have been building bonds as a family. Keep doing that but in a space outside your home. Be eager to go back to school because it is a platform for expressing yourself as a social creature. Be eager to enter your workplace because it is a platform for expressing yourself as a social creature.

Appreciate at least one thing in life and that is real social interaction; it completes you as a person. Those who wish to enter and live in a virtual world – it takes imagination – really.
