The unease of dealing with someone in authority is widespread from a child-parent, learner-teacher, employee-employer to the various levels of governmental positions. Ultimately it comes down to those who may judge you and/or those whose position has a higher standing, be it temporarily or permanently.

In many cases you consider your answers (and even questions) while you are concerned about the consequences thereof. Answers may at times be based on what you think the ‘authoritative’ party want to hear. This all adds to levels of stress which in turn has its own consequences. Perhaps this may be understandable on some bureaucratic level but certainly one must question when this happens in family and social circles. Respect is one thing but the fear of saying something ‘wrong’ cannot make for healthy relationships. It is true that you cannot always agree but there must be a way to deal with disagreements or misunderstanding. There will always be friction and the damage to confidence and self-esteem will complicate matters for all parties but at least one party will feel extreme pain. Somehow these situations and relationships need improvement and you are a likely ‘victim’ in some instances and the ‘authority’ in others. You need to make the difference on both fronts.

Thus it is important to use words like ‘I understand’ and ‘ it’s okay’ and even ‘ I am sorry, I may have overreacted’ – whatever these words may be, it must be words of comfort and words to indicate that it’s okay that you disagree on some matters. Ultimately, it must translate to the fact that the other party has your confidence and that respect. Smooth relationships become effective when parties are assured that they will not be ‘victimised’ and there is a sense of freedom in their communications.

You err even though you don’t intend harming others but you must always hasten to repair relationship and taking responsibility when you have come up short in having the correct approach. Your world starts with those around you and you ought to make this world a better place. Let it be a world of love and peace.
