The more we are different, the more we are the same. While the more famous saying of Maya Angelou is “Human beings are more alike than we are unalike.”, my point is somewhat different. The differences in our outlook on life means our strengths and weaknesses, our passions, and our relative levels of skill and ambition, at some point, still needs nurturing, growth and development.

The framework is all the same and when you work well within the framework you are applying the principles just as everyone else is. A group of people can be seated in a room, all having different goals and aspirations, from different walks of life, but specifically their immediate job, project or current occupation or even leisure activity may be different. You are seated there because you want to understand how to reach your goal. The framework is what is important and that is what becomes the basis for your action plan. Everyone can achieve relative success by following the action plan while understanding how to apply the specifics of their immediate field of interest. Importantly, if you go through this process thoroughly once, you can apply it across many aspects of your life. There might be a need for some tweaking here and there, and then it is helpful to have access to a mentor or coach. The key is learning about the framework for goalsetting and understanding how to apply the specifics. All that is left is to trust the process. The best thing you can do for yourself is to take something small, like being a social runner, and you learn the process to go from “couch to 10km” in a specific period of time, meaning that over time, you learn how to run ten kilometres. For many it may seem difficult, but when you go through the process, you will see that it is relatively easy. Likewise, there are other things in your life that you parked because you were not sure how you were going to achieve it. Remember that to run ten kilometres, you must take the first step. You already had that thought, that idea, that goal in your head, it just needs you to take the first step.

I am not big on “the sky is the limit” but rather believing that with a little help, the mindset can be put in the right gear and that there is a continual striving for growth and development on all fronts in your life. Belief means little without action.
