Success is relative. There are many types of competitions with sports being the best example. Life itself is not a competition but it is about you are being the best you can be. It is about having solid relationships with family and friends. It is about uplifting and being uplifted. It is about respect, discipline, being teachable and being real. Competition is confined to spaces beyond living life itself.

Success is relative. One examination does not make you a winner or a failure. Rather, it is the knowledge and skills acquired that matters. It is the discipline, which you have made a cornerstone of your life, that matters. It is that you are decent and respectful that matters. Any examination is but a steppingstone and is never a defining moment. It is the sacrifices, the time and effort that were the defining periods in your life. This is what you must be measured on. If you lacked in some of this, then you can still improve on it. Your academic life is but one part of your life and there is much more required to make you a well-rounded person. It may be that your skills lie elsewhere, so the meaningfulness of some academic results is somewhat lower. You must not have any pressure in any examination except that it is important to you always to do your best. There is no competition. There can be no expectation, from someone else, regarding your results. The most important aspect is that you have prepared yourself well and that is the same effort you present in the examination. Of course, teachers are always keen to assist in that preparation. But preparation is that effort that is planned and which is underpinned by discipline. There can be no judgement on results. Of course, when completing high school, then tertiary institutions have academic requirements for you to achieve before acceptance. That moment of acceptance or rejection is merely an event. What transpired before then is more about life. How did you get to this point? Before you receive your results from your examination, you already have a fair expectation of what it will be. You cannot expect more than the effort you exerted. Neither can you expect more than your ability. It is not a competition that you have to look to others with superior ability. You have other strengths that they don’t have.

I do not believe you look at examination results and deem people failures. How your report card is viewed is the consequence of the schooling system. Your report card, good or bad, does not define you. And again, the expectation of you by others is of little consequence. It is about having a plan and being able to pursue that plan beyond your life at school or tertiary education. The winner, the successful person, is the one who does not allow the system to define them but seeks to carve out a real life beyond it.

Always strive to do your best. It is helpful to choose the right path.
