Two of the most common traits of people are (first) they imagine themselves doing well but do little, if anything, to make it a reality. The second trait, perhaps as a result of the first, is that they often marvel at others doing well without following their example. The truth is that the system does not naturally help people achieve. But is there a way to achieve goals and ultimately, success, without being handpicked or stepping on the failures of others? explore the answer.

The first thing that you will notice about successful people is that they have a coach, or mentor. The roles may differ, but the principle is the same. The most successful athletes have coaches. We watch these athletes and marvel, forgetting that their excellence is built through guidance. You may never reach their level, but with a coach you can improve your own performance. On the work front, people enter the workplace with a lot of theory — much like a football player who has memorised the rules but never played a match. Why does a sportsperson have to be coached to understand the game better and to perform, yet we assume careers don’t need the assistance of a mentor or coach? So, make it part of your plan for success to find a role model, a coach, or a mentor.

You may say that the next point is really just an add-on to the first. However, it is important enough on its own. That point is about staying positive. Do not envy people or try to step over them. Instead, run alongside them, growing stronger until you pass them through your own effort and merit. You need to be strong and build yourself into someone worthy of success. Celebrate not the failures of others, but your own growth into a champion.

While there are many more points to consider in achieving success, it does start with you wanting true success. Real success is long term, and it requires steady growth. You will need to move beyond theory and be ready to be coached to claim your own success. Stadiums are filled with spectators cheering for champions. The question is—will you be among the spectators, or among the champions on the field?
