Boxing is one sport, because of its pure brutality, that the referee steps in and calls a stop to the fight. This is when one boxer is virtually “out on his feet” and unable to defend himself against a vicious and damaging onslaught from his opponent. And just sometimes you hear ordinary people talking about feeling like they have been in a boxing match.

Stress is a cruel opponent. In boxing, you expect the boxer to have studied his opponent before stepping into the ring to face him and thus come prepared. But in life, you may be on the bad end of a beating by some fella called stress and you are entirely and utterly unprepared. The number of people facing stress and leaving it unchallenged is so high that to say “everyone” is not too much of a generalisation. The referee in this case is your health but even then, the fight is not stopped unless it really is considered life-threatening. And what is life threatening?  Must you be on your deathbed? Sadly, people are suckers for punishment. Ah yes, the system is cruel, and it is designed to cause stress. Will you then just soak it up. Instead of learning from all this, the new generation kids are on a hiding to nothing because they are born into stress. They experience stress as bystanders firstly, then are stressed by just about everything else, be it sports, academics, bullying, bad parenting, peer pressure and a whole lot more. Of course, bad eating habits exacerbates the already toxic stress-laden life. People joke about the rat race as if it is an honour to be part of such an environment. Whilst you cannot extricate yourself from the system, you can develop plans and strategies to deal with you stress-inducing opponent.

The saying goes “they don’t make them like they used to”. Today, people are less than prepared for the ever-growing challenges.  Stress and its agents are pummeling the life out of people and not even medical aid can cover their bills. Stress, the dirty nasty opponent. Sometimes though you might be the agent of stress. Rather be kind and charitable.
